El Mundo, short for El Mundo del Siglio Veintunio ("The World of the 21st Century"), began publishing on October 23, 1989. It was founded by Alfonso de Salas, Pedro J. Ramírez, Balbino Fraga and Juan González, a journalist. The newspaper is operated by Unidad Editorial Información General S.L.U., a division of RCS Media.
