Asahi Shimbun is a daily newspaper in Tokyo, Japan covering local news, sports, business, jobs, and community events.
Asahi Shimbun is one of Japan's five "national newspapers," along with Sankei Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun, Nihon Keizai Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun. In 1994, the French newspaper Le Monde ranked Asahi Shimbun as one of the 8 best daily newspapers in the world. The others were the New York Times (United States), Financial Times (United Kingdom), Izvestia (Russia), People's Daily (China), Al Ahram (Egypt), El Espectador (Colombia) and Times of India.
The English edition of the Asahi Shimbun is published in cooperation with the International Herald Tribune, which is owned by the New York Times Company. The English language newspaper is co-branded with both newspaper names.
