Mondo Times editors Boulder, Colorado USA | Posted at 2:17pm on Thursday, August 20th, 2009 | Melissa Hanna has been named the top editor at the Athens Banner-Herald, the newspaper reported on August 14, 2009:
"A newsroom veteran will take the reins of the Athens Banner-Herald today, replacing departed executive editor Jason Winders.
Melissa Hanna, news director of the Banner-Herald and OnlineAthens.com, officially was named to the top newsroom position Thursday.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina at Aiken, Hanna has worked in journalism since 1996, when she began to write for the student newspaper. She went on to become the news editor at the Aiken Standard and came to the Banner-Herald as the assistant news editor in 2004.
"I have never worked with such dedicated people as those I have worked next to for the past five years," said Hanna, 32. "It's no secret that our industry is facing a lot of challenges, and every newspaper in this country has struggled to find its footing.
"However, I can't imagine having any other group than this staff walk alongside me as we face these challenges head-on. I've never believed in anything more than I believe in us."
Hired at the Banner-Herald as a copy editor - an employee who selects news stories, writes headlines and designs news pages - Hanna took the news director job in 2006 as the newsroom integrated print and online reporting into a single department."
