The Fitzgerald Herald-Leader traces its roots to the founding of The Fitzgerald Herald in 1916 by J.J. Pryor & S.G. Pryor. Jerry Pryor bought the Herald from his father and uncle in 1959. Tim Anderson and Becky Pryor Anderson bought the newspaper, then named the Herald-Leader, in 1997. It covers Fitzgerald -- created in 1895 as a community for Civil War veterans by Indianapolis newspaper editor (and former Union drummer boy) Philander H. Fitzgerald -- and the surrounding communities of Ben Hill County, Georgia.
