A Gary resident has become the first black county clerk in the county's history, The Gary Post-Tribune reported on January 2, 2010:

"Mike Brown's ascension to the politically powerful office, with a $2 million annual budget and at least 100 employees, cleared the way for a growing field of hopefuls trying to get the county's precinct committee organization to name them county recorder in a special caucus scheduled for Jan. 30.

The next step for Brown will be to run for the office in the May primaries. "We should be blind to color, and we should be open to qualifications," Brown told the standing room only crowd inside the Gary city courtroom. "Now, the next thing is to ask the voters, because I cannot and will not stay in this position if I don't win the election."
