The Blade-Empire traces its roots to the founding of The Republican Valley Empire on May 31, 1870. Operations were relocated to Concordia later that year and the newspaper printed its first edition in Concordia on December 24, 1870. The Blade was founded on April 23, 1879. The Empire and the Blade merged on May 29, 1920. The newspaper was subsequently renamed The Concordia Blade-Empire.
