The Salina Journal was founded as a weekly newspaper in February 1871. It is now published in the morning, seven days a week. On December 1, 2016, GateHouse Media bought the paper as part of its acquisition of Harris Enterprises Inc. in Hutchinson, Kansas for $20 million. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged it with GateHouse under the Gannett name.
