The Morning Sentinel was founded on March 2, 1904 by officials of the Waterville Democratic Party. In 1921, the newspaper was bought by Guy Gannett (no relation to the Virginia-based Gannett Company), who was in the process of building a newspaper, radio and television empire in Maine. In 1998, Gannett's heirs sold the Morning Sentinel to the Seattle Times Company, which rechristened the chain "Blethen Maine Newspapers" in honor of Seattle Times founder Albert Blethen, a Maine native. In 2009, the newspaper was then sold to MaineToday Media.
