Founded in 1995, The Citizen covers Beverly and the surrounding communities of Essex County, Massachusetts. The newspaper was once part of the now-defunct North Shore Weeklies, which was sold to Fidelity Investments in 1986. In 1991, Fidelity created a holding company, Community Newspaper Company, for several of its media properties. In 2001, Fidelity sold CNC to the Boston Herald. In 2006, CNC -- New England's largest publisher of weekly newspapers -- was purchased by Gate House Media.
