The Vineyard Gazette began publication in 1846, founded by Edgar Marchant. It is published twice a week in the summer and once each week in the winter. In November 2010, the Reston family sold the Vineyard Gazette to Jerome Kohlberg, co-founder of the New York investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. The price was $3.5 million. With the purchase, Kohlberg formed a holding company called The Martha’s Vineyard Gazette LLC to own the newspaper. Kohlberg has been a seasonal resident of Martha's Vineyard for over half a century, since first visiting the island in 1943.
