Mondo Times editors Boulder Colorado USA | Posted at 3:18pm on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 | Why One Detroit Reporter Is Leaving to Become a Foreign Service Office with the U.S. State Dept.
The Detroit Free Press reported on January 10, 2010:
"You never saw David Josar's name in this newspaper -- because he worked for the competition.
As a Detroit News reporter, off-and-on starting during the strike of the 1990s, Josar broke his share of big stories.
But the quirky 42-year-old is more than a reporter. He bought a house in the city, in a sketchy neighborhood, and made a go of it for a long time.
He's had enough. He's selling off his possessions and moving abroad soon as a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Department."

Mondo Times editors Boulder Colorado USA | Posted at 9:02am on Monday, December 28th, 2009 | Longtime Detroit News editorial cartoonist Larry Wright is retiring at the end of the year, political cartoon blogger Daryl Cagle reported on December 23, 2009:
"I’m saddened to write that Larry Wright, who has worked as an editorial cartoonist for the Detroit News for decades, is retiring at the end of this month. We syndicate Larry’s cartoons to more than 800 newspapers. Larry was one of the first cartoonists to join us when we launched our syndicate nearly ten years ago. Larry writes:
It is difficult for me to accept an end to editorial cartooning — I started doing it in my first newspaper job in 1961. I have been retired from the Detroit News since April 2006 but they kept me on for 3 free-lance cartoons a week till the economy crash in 2008 had them cut me to 2 a week. As things got worse they cut me down to one a week a few months ago and are cutting me off the end of the year.
It’s not like I’m facing poverty. I have a full pension from Gannett and I just signed a new three-year contract for Kit ‘n’ Carlyle, a daily panel I’ve been doing for United Media since 1980.
Although we will miss him, Larry will be keeping busy.
The Detroit News still has me doing regular free-lance editing and photography of collector car shows on the Detroit News website. It’s called Joyrides and has had a big audience since the late 1990s. I also get to show off my Corvette convertible at these shows."

Mondo Times editors Boulder, Colorado USA | Posted at 12:33pm on Thursday, December 18th, 2008 | On December 16, 2008, Editor & Publisher magazine reported that the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press will stop delivering newspapers to readers on most weekdays:
"Detroit Media Partnership CEO David Hunke told production and editorial union leaders Tuesday that there will be no newsroom layoffs when the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News drop four home delivery days completely.
The Free Press will be delivered Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays starting in March, while The News will be delivered Thursdays and Fridays.
Hunke confirmed to union leaders what local and industry journalists had been reporting for days: Most home delivery will be stopped, the paper will print a one-section street edition on the days of no home delivery, and digital subscriptions will be encouraged.
Hunke told the seven or eight union officials at the meeting that the new "business plan" will not launch until some time near the end of the first quarter of 2009."
