Hannibal Courier Post is a daily newspaper in Hannibal, Missouri, USA covering local news, sports, business, jobs, and community events.
The newspaper is published six days a week - Monday through Saturday.
The Courier Post traces its roots the founding of the Commercial Advertiser in 1837. The Pacific Monitor succeeded the Commercial Advertiser, appearing for the first time on May 9, 1840. In 1841, the Monitor became the Hannibal Journal. The Journal, in 1850, was purchased by Orion Clemens who changed its name to Hannibal Journal and Western Union. Clemens sold it in the fall of 1853 to William League, who had started the Hannibal Messenger in September 1851. In 1860, Mr. League sold to Frazee, Ebert and Co. In 1863, the Messenger merged with the Palmyra Courier, and the name was changed to North Missouri Courier. Later, this newspaper became the Hannibal Courier. The Hannibal Courier-Post dates back to 1891 when the Daily Post, founded by Thomas B. Morris in 1886, was combined with the Courier and the present name came into being. The Morning Journal became absorbed by the Courier-Post on February 26, 1918. In January 1907, the newspaper was sold to the Courier-Post Publishing Company and Lee Enterprises. Hannibal's most famous citizen, Mark Twain, claimed to have received his introduction to newspaper work in 1849 when he worked as a "printer's devil" in the office of the old Missouri Courier.
