The Journal Star traces its roots to the founding of the morning Lincoln Star (in 1905) and the evening Lincoln Journal (in 1867, as the Nebraska Commonwealth and, later, Nebraska State Journal). Lee Enterprises, which had owned the Star since 1930, bought the Journal from its local owners, the Seacrest family, in 1995. The evening newspaper was discontinued after the merger.
