The Times was founded in 1882. The newspaper was owned by the Kerney family from the turn of the 20th century, and was sold to The Washington Post Company in 1974. Allbritton Communications Company bought the Times on October 30, 1981. In December 1986, the newspaper was sold to Advance Publications, Inc., the privately-held company owned by the Newhouse family.
