As of January 1, 2010, your driver's license might not get you through airline security, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported on November 30, 2009:

"New Mexico isn't alone in this predicament. There are 36 states in all that don't meet the law's standards, meaning airline traffic could face big disruptions come Jan. 1.

Unless, of course, the federal government grants noncompliant states an extension, which is what New Mexico officials are requesting from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

She should act quickly to grant that request — but more importantly, the Obama administration and Congress need to get moving to scrap the Real ID Act."
