The Leader traces its roots to the founding of The Corning Journal (in 1847) and The Corning Sun (in 1853). The Sun changed hands and became known as the Southern Tier Farmer and, later, the Corning Democrat. In 1903, the name was changed to The Evening Leader, then to The Corning Leader, and finally to The Leader. The Journal merged with The Evening Leader in 1920. In 1972, the newspaper was sold to Howard Publications of California. Lee Publications purchased The Leader from Howard Publications in 2002. In 2004 Liberty Group Publishing, a division of GateHouse Media, purchased The Leader.
