The Journal was founded as the Poughkeepsie Journal and Country Journal in 1785. It is the oldest newspaper in New York State. In 1840, the newspaper merged with the Poughkeepsie Eagle. In 1880, the newspaper merged with the Poughkeepsie News. While the publication has undergone several changes in title, it has been known as The Poughkeepsie Journal since 1982. Gannett acquired the newspaper in 1977.
