WUNC TV 4 is an affiliate of the PBS Television Network.
UNC-TV began broadcasting on January 8, 1955. It was the first educational television station south of Washington, D.C. In the next 12 years, three more stations signed on and a system of translators in the mountains allowed the network to reach across the entire state of North Carolina. The network was known on-air as North Carolina Public Television from the 1970s through the mid-1990s, when it began calling itself University of North Carolina Television. It adopted the shorter name of UNC-TV later in the 1990s.
