North Carolina City Receives National Award for Crime-Prevention Efforts

The New Bern (N.C.) Sun Journal reported on January 17, 2010:

"For the second year in a row, New Bern has received national recognition for its efforts to prevent neighborhood crime.

Its National Night Out at Union Point Park in August was recently recognized as one of the most successful events of its kind in the country. The National Association of Town Watch measured New Bern against municipalities of similar size and said the city had “outstanding participation” in its event, according to Danielle Glynn, one of the local organizers. In New Bern in particular, the award signals the revival of a neighborhood watch program that had been dormant for years until Glynn decided to revive it in 2008.

National Night Out is intended to strengthen ties between residents and law enforcement officers so that people aren’t afraid to report suspicious activity and ultimately prevent crime, violence and illegal drug use. The summertime event exists to “restore pride and community” to New Bern’s neighborhoods and to remind people to be aware of what is happening in their own backyards, Glynn said."
