The Old Gold and Black was founded in 1916. It is the student-run newspaper at Wake Forest University. The newspaper is responsible for naming the Wake Forest mascot. In 1923, sports editor Mayon Parker referred to the team as "Demon Deacons," in honor of its fighting spirit. In time, the nickname stuck.
