WEWS TV 5 is an affiliate of the ABC Television Network.
WEWS TV 5 began broadcasting on December 17, 1947. It was the first licensed television station in Ohio. The call letters denote the initials of the parent company's founder, Edward Willis Scripps. WEWS has been owned by the E. W. Scripps Company since its inception. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, WEWS produced several programs that enjoyed national exposure through syndication. One such program was Upbeat, which featured a live audience, a group of dancers and live (or lip-synched) performances by artists such as Aretha Franklin, the Beatles, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder.
