WEWS TV 5 is the ABC network affiliate station in Cleveland, Ohio. The station began broadcasting on December 17, 1947; it was the first licensed television station in Ohio. The call letters denote the initials of the parent company's founder, Edward Willis Scripps. WEWS has been owned by the E. W. Scripps Company from the beginning.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, WEWS produced several programs that gained national exposure through syndication. One was Upbeat, which featured a live audience, a group of dancers and live (or lip-synched) performances by artists such as Aretha Franklin, the Beatles, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder.
This TV station is owned by E.W. Scripps Company.
