Former Police Chief Sentenced In Parker-Broderick Case, The Martins Ferry Times Leader reported on December 30, 2009:

"Former Martins Ferry police chief Barry Carpenter convicted of crimes in connection with at the celebrity surrogate scandal was sentenced this morning in a Belmont County courtroom.

A jury previously found Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. He resigned from his position as chief earlier this month.

Belmont County Judge John Solovan sentenced Carpenter to a prison term of two years and eight months, beginning immediately. The sentencing was scheduled for 8:30 this morning but Carpenter did not appear in the courtroom until 10:20.

Carpenter was tried in connection with an alleged conspiracy to take items from a woman who acted as a surrogate mother for the twins of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick."
