Middletown Journal is a daily newspaper in Middletown, Ohio, USA covering local news, sports, business, jobs, and community events.
The newspaper is published seven days a week.
The Journal traces its roots to the founding of the Western Journal on January 12, 1857. The name was changed to the Middletown Journal in 1859. Publication was suspended during the American Civil War, but resumed by 1871. The newspaper went through a series of ownership changes. The first Sunday edition was published on September 4, 1921. In 1924, the newspaper was purchased by Chew Publications. In 1928, the newspaper purchased the other daily in Middletown, the Middletown News-Signal. The Journal was published as an evening newspaper chiefly distributed in the city and the News-Signal operated as a morning newspaper distributed to outlying areas. Chew owned the newspaper until 1978, when the company merged with the Thomson Corporation (which became Thomson Reuters in 2008), the Canadian newspaper giant. When Thomson decided to exit the newspaper business, it reached a deal to sell the Journal to Gannett Company, Inc.. However, Cox Communications had an option on Thomson's properties and the Journal was instead sold to Cox. The sale was completed September 2, 2000.
