The Daily Journal was founded on February 7, 1927 when C.P. Wenfield consolidated two weekly newspapers, the Republican and the Sentinel. Wenfield's successor was Milo W. Watson, hired as advertising manager in 1943. Watson bought an interest in the Journal in 1945. In 1996, at the death of Watson, the Journal was purchased by the Phillip Reid and Kenneth Reid families, a longstanding Oklahoma newspaper family. The newspaper's motto, printed below the name plate on the print edition's front page, reads as follows: "If you would avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing and be nothing."
