The Spingfield News ceased publication in October 2006. Founded in 1903, the community newspaper had been losing money for years according to owner Lee Enterprises, which acquired the paper in 1997. The News was published twice a week with a circulation of 4,211, until February 2006, when it became a free weekly mailed to Springfield residents each Friday.
