The Erie (Penn.) Bureau of Fire Asks the Public's Help in Clearing Snow from Hydrants

The Erie Times-News reported on January 12, 2010:

"We're asking citizens' help, as we have in the past, to help us shovel out hydrants," bureau Chief Tony Pol said. "In case there's a fire, it saves valuable time if the firefighters can spot the hydrant and don't need to dig out before they hook up."

There are more than 2,000 hydrants in the city, Pol said. Firefighters have been clearing 60 hydrants a day for the past week, he said.

Ideally, hydrants should be clear of snow for 3 feet in all directions, Pol said. He cautioned residents not to overexert themselves while shoveling.

"My guys have been working very hard at it, and a little help would be good," he said."
