WJAC TV 6 began broadcasting on September 15, 1949. The station's call letters stood for its original owner, the Johnstown Automotive Company. In the 1960s, Johnstown Automotive sold WJAC to the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat. Channel 6 was subsequently sold to Sunrise Television in 1997 before being acquired by Cox in 2000.

This TV station is owned by Cox Media Group.
