CBS Philadelphia Launching Digital Newsstands, Mediaweek reported on November 24, 2009:

"In a sign of what’s to come in CBS’ local markets, CBS TV and radio stations in Philadelphia announced that its two stations and five radio units have teamed with Center City Direct to launch a street-level digital news network at 39 newsstands.

Operated by Center City Direct, each digital newsstand sports a high definition TV screen and a 24-hour news ticker, airing content from multiple sources featuring news, weather and sports updates and tourist information about Philadelphia. Plans are to expand the network to 120 digital newsstands.

“Providing a street-level news service is another way to provide the viewer with the news and information they need wherever they are and whenever they need it," said Jon Hitchcock, president and general manager of the CBS duopoly.

"Ultimately, we want CBS to be the news source locally.”

Former KYW TV (CBS 3) news anchor Larry Mendte is suing the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News reported on June 4, 2009:

"Former CBS 3 anchor Larry Mendte filed a lawsuit late yesterday against two Inquirer reporters and a former Daily News columnist, claiming charges of defamation and false light, according to court documents.

The lawsuit alleges that Mendte and former co-anchor Alycia Lane once had "a romantic relationship."

Mendte was fired from CBS 3 in June 2008, after federal investigators learned that he had hacked into Lane's e-mail account on several occasions. Mendte was convicted and served six months' house arrest in his Chestnut Hill home, which ended Monday.

Lane, who filed her own lawsuit against the Daily News and others on Sept. 23, was fired after her arrest in New York in December 2007, allegedly for assaulting a police officer, but charges in the case were dismissed.

Mendte's lawsuit claims that the romantic relationship lasted from late 2003 to January 2005."

On November 24, 2008, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on some TV news malfeasance by former CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte:

Disgraced former CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte will serve six months of house arrest for his guilty plea to reading the e-mails of former co-anchor Alycia Lane and feeding the details to newspaper gossip columnists.

U.S. District Judge Mary A. McLaughlin also sentenced Mendte, 51, to three years probation, a $5,000 fine and to perform 250 hours of community service.

Before he was sentenced, Mendte told the court: "When I look back on the story of my life, I can't believe it brought me to this moment. I am ashamed."

Mendte said he was grateful that Alycia Lane was present so that he could apologize to her.

He turned to look at Lane, whose lower lip was quivering as if she was about to cry, and said: "I am also sorry that you did not believe my previous public apology was sincere."

Present in court, but silent throughout the hearing was Lane, 36, who had filed suit against Mendte contending that his jealousy over her ascending career and popularity led him to hack into her e-mail account and spread salacious details to gossip columnists that ultimately resulted in her firing.

Lane has also sued CBS3, the Daily News and columnist Dan Gross for their purported roles in spreading information leaked to them by Mendte. The Daily News is owned by Philadelphia Media Holdings L.L.C., which also publishes The Inquirer.
