The Russellville Democrat began publication on January 28, 1875. The Courier, a competing weekly, and the Russellville Democrat consolidated in 1898 to become The Courier-Democrat. A daily edition was started in 1909. A Sunday edition of The Courier-Democrat was added in 1976. In August 1991, Paducah Newspapers, Inc., which was to become Paxton Media Group, Inc., purchased The Courier-Democrat. In February 1994, the name of the publication was changed from The Courier-Democrat to The Courier.
