The Greenwood Democrat traces its roots to 1881, when W.W. Woods began publishing The Western World. It changed owners some two dozen times over the years. In June 1997, it was bought by a group of Ohio investors called Westward Communications LLC. In March of 2000 The Donrey Media Group, named after its founder, Donald W. Reynolds, purchased the newspaper. After Reynolds died in 1993, Donrey was sold to the Stephens Group of Little Rock, Arkansas.
