The Sun News was founded in 1935 as the weekly Myrtle Beach News by brothers-in-law C. L. Phillips and J. Clarence Macklen. The newspaper changed ownership several times over the years. In 1961, it merged with the Myrtle Beach Sun (founded in 1950), becoming The Sun News, and soon began publishing twice weekly. The Sun News was acquired by The State Record Company in 1973. In 1986 the Sun News was purchased by Knight Ridder Inc. McClatchy purchased Knight Ridder in June 2006.
