The Messenger was first printed on March 8, 1893. The County Messenger, as it was called, was a weekly newspaper published by T.J. Drew and Associates. During the first half of the 20th century, the Hartsville Messenger was a pioneer among weekly newspapers in the use of local pictures and in serving the black community by publishing a weekly column edited by an African-American. In March 2008, Media General acquired The Messenger.
