The Pulse was launched in 2003. In 2008 it was purchased by Brewer Media, which also operates five radio stations in Chattanooga.

-- The Tennessee alt-weekly stopped print publication on March 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 shock to entertainment and dining businesses in Chattanooga. Managing Editor Gary Poole wrote: "We are exploring ways to keep elements of The Pulse going, either online or with features on the radio stations we share a building with and their websites. We are also considering station apps or podcasts."
