The Abilene Reporter-News began publishing on June 17, 1881. It is the oldest continuous business in the city. The newspaper, owned in the early 1920s by Ed Hanks, became one of the two original flagships of the Harte-Hanks newspaper chain. Scripps began operating the newspaper in 1997 after purchasing it from Harte-Hanks.
