Dean Of Texas Political Writers Banned From GOP Debate, the Texas Tribune reported on December 23, 2009:

"Paul Burka, the dean of Texas political writers, won't be asking questions when the Republican gubernatorial candidates debate next month. He's been banned.

"I didn’t like the idea of it," says Terry Sullivan, campaign manager for candidate Kay Bailey Hutchison. "He's got his mind made up on the race."

Texas Monthly, where Burka works as executive editor, writer, and a popular blogger, was a sponsor of the debate. When the chief sponsor — KERA-TV in Dallas — told the magazine they were welcome to send any panelist except for Burka, the magazine not only declined to substitute someone but also pulled its name off the January 14 event.

Other sponsors — KERA, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, KTVT-TV in Dallas, Univision, and the Texas Association of Broadcasters, Texas State Networks and the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas — remain."

Elynn Russell has been promoted to president of Texas Monthly magazine, Emmis Publishing announced on July 17, 2009. Russell replaces Evan Smith in the role.

Emmis Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Emmis Communications Corporation, today announced that Evan Smith is stepping down as President/Editor-in-Chief of Texas Monthly to become CEO of the Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public media organization. He will remain involved with the magazine as a consultant and will continue to host Texas Monthly Talks as editor emeritus.

Elynn Russell, Executive Vice President/Advertising-Administration and a 30-year veteran of the magazine, has been promoted to President of Texas Monthly.

"I owe Evan my deepest gratitude for his many contributions through the years," said Gary Thoe, President of Emmis Publishing. "Under Evan's expert leadership, Texas Monthly enjoyed commercial success and critical acclaim. Winning two National Magazine Awards for General Excellence in the last six years and fourteen more nominations over the last nine is testament to Evan's literary strength. We're pleased that he will continue his involvement and equally pleased that we didn't need to look far for his replacement as President."

Russell joined Texas Monthly in 1977. Since then, she has served in various business capacities including Advertising Planning Director and Senior Vice President of Operations. Russell has overseen sales operations countrywide and managed human resources. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.

Texas Monthly won the National Magazine Award (nicknamed an Ellie) for general excellence in its circulation category in April 2009.

In this year's citation, the American Society of Magazine Editors wrote: "Texas Monthly is the city magazine of that state called Texas, and there is nothing about the place—from its big businesses, like college football, to its poets, like Willie Nelson; from its problems, like falsely convicted inmates, to its fine cuisine, barbecue and pie—that it doesn’t deeply explore and precisely map in prose and pictures. Nominated 54 times, this is the magazine’s tenth Ellie and fourth win for General Excellence."
