Eric Kallgren Boulder, Colorado USA | Posted at 1:52pm on Saturday, March 28th, 2009 | The Houston Chronicle is laying off 12% of its employees.
On March 25, 2009, the Chronicle reported the news:
"The Houston Chronicle is laying off approximately 12 percent of its employees in an effort to reduce costs amid unprecedented change in the newspaper industry, Chronicle Publisher and President Jack Sweeney announced Tuesday.
“As our newspaper continues to report the condition of the economy, we read about companies in all business categories adjusting their size to match current and projected revenues,” Sweeney wrote to Chronicle employees. “The Houston Chronicle must do the same in spite of your diligent efforts.”
The layoffs include about 90 people in the Chronicle newsroom.
The newsroom will be restructured, but the core mission of providing strong watchdog journalism, aggressive online coverage and reflecting the diversity of the Houston area will remain, Editor Jeff Cohen said."

Eric Kallgren Boulder, Colorado USA | Posted at 4:07pm on Sunday, January 11th, 2009 | In late October, 2008, the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported that weekday circulation at the 507 daily newspapers it tracks fell 4.6% for the six months through September, compared with a 2.6% decline in the same period a year ago. Sunday circulation fell 4.9% in the latest period, compared with a 3.5% decline reported a year earlier.
The Houston Chronicle had one of the biggest declines, with weekday circulation falling 11.7%. Sunday circulation dropped even more, by 15.7%.
The two largest U.S. newspapers -- USA Today and The Wall Street Journal -- were the only newspapers that did not suffer declining circulation. For both papers, circulation was essentially unchanged.
