The Express traces its roots to the founding of the Uintah Papoose on January 2, 1891. James Barker acquired the Papoose in 1892 and changed the name to the Vernal Express. Barker published the Express for six years before selling to J.A. Holdaway on March 17, 1989. The Wallis family owned the Express from 1921 until the death of fourth-generation publisher Steve Wallis in 2007. At that time, the newspaper was sold to Brehm Communications.
