The News & Advance traces its roots to the founding of The News (1866) and The Daily Advance (1880). In 1888, Carter Glass bought The News. In 1893, he bought The Daily Advance and merged its business operations with The News, with news and opinion operations remaining separate. The Glass family continued to publish both newspapers until 1979, when they were purchased by Worrell Newspapers Inc. In 1995, Worrell sold The News & Advance to Media General.

The News & Advance does acceptable coverage on local news and good on reports
involving local volunteer efforts. However, articles and opinions display a high degree of bias towards evangelical extremists and republican support.
