The Gazette was first published by William Parks on August 6, 1736. When, at the urging of Gov. Thomas Jefferson, the capital was relocated from Williamsburg to Richmond in 1780, the newspaper followed. The Gazette returned to Williamsburg on January 10, 1930. In March 1986, the Gazette was sold to Chesapeake Publishing Corp., a subsidiary of Whitney Communications. In 2001, The Daily Press Inc., a subsidiary of Tribune Company, bought the Gazette.
