Last five nuns set to leave Catholic school, the Wheeling (W. Va.) Intelligencer reported on December 1, 2009:

"After having a presence in Wheeling since 1848, the remaining members of the Sisters of Visitation at Mount de Chantal are leaving.

"The deciding factor for this action is based in Church law relative to monastic communities with declining numbers," Sister Mary Alicia Sours, V.H.M., superior, said today in a news release. "It is typical for the Vatican to move a smaller community like ours into the nearest monastery within the order."

The local sisters had been educators serving the Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy, which was built on its current site in 1865. The academy closed its doors in May 2008 due to financial constraints and a dwindling school population.

The all-girls school graduated 11 students in the Class of 2008."
