School Lunch Statistics Another Sign of the Economic Times

The Marinette (Wisc.) Eagle Herald reported on January 12, 2010:

"Nutrition director Janelle Schultz informed members that paid lunches are down a total of 70 in the first three months of the school year compared to last year. Breakfast numbers are up 77 but both totals are slightly skewed because of the number of free and reduced-priced meals being provided.

The number of students paying full price for lunch is down 116 from last year while the number of free lunches is up 70. Reduced lunches are down 33.

Schultz presented figures for elementary, middle and high school. "At all three levels, meals are down," she said. "The biggest drop is at the middle school where the number of enrollments has declined the most."

In every category, the amount students and teachers are spending out-of-pocket is down from last year."
