Hollywood Reporter, Backstage, Billboard, Other Nielsen Entertainment Publications to be Sold

The Wrap reported on November 10, 2009:

"It has been a brutal period in magazine publishing, and for business-to-business trades in general. The Hollywood Reporter in particular has suffered huge fall-offs in revenue, readership and even online followers.

Several reports have suggested that the Reporter would be abandoning its print version in the near future. The daily has run very few print ads and Hollywood studios have cut back severely on their traditional “for your consideration” Oscar campaigns, the source of much of the trade’s annual revenues.

All of Nielsen’s entertainment titles are suffering. “Billboard is doing so-so, Adweek is not doing well at all, and THR is not great,” said a former senior Nielsen executive. “The B-to-B market has just collapsed."

Roger Friedman is joining The Hollywood Reporter, the newspaper announced on May 18, 2009:

Veteran entertainment reporter and columnist Roger Friedman is joining The Hollywood Reporter as a senior correspondent.

Based in New York, Friedman brings with him more than two decades of experience -- including access to stars and the people who make them. He will continue his online 24/7 ShowBiz411 blog -- which will now move to THR's stable of blogs including The Live Feed, Risky Business and THR, Esq. In addition, he'll provide breaking news for THR.com and occasional longer pieces for the daily newspaper as well as appear in THR video products and at THR-branded events. He also will play a key role in THR's multiplatform coverage of the Oscars, the Emmys, the Tonys and the Grammys.

"To have such an experienced and respected journalist as part of our entertainment team will be a major asset for Nielsen Business Media," THR publisher Eric Mika said.

Added THR editor Elizabeth Guider: "For some time, THR has wanted to beef up its coverage of the celebrity world and how it intersects with and influences the business of showbusiness. Bringing Roger on board gives us a great leg up in that effort and will help extend our audience reach."

Friedman created and wrote the daily Fox411 column at FoxNews.com beginning in 1999. Over the years he became a leading authority on Michael Jackson, from coverage of the pop star's 2005 child-molestation trial to stories about the singer's financial perils. Friedman also broke stories about Anna Nicole Smith's medical situation, leading to the indictment of her physician, and on the shady dealings of money manager to the stars Dana Giacchetto. He was the first to report Sen. John Kerry's decision to run for the presidency (revealed at an Academy Awards party) and the breakup of New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's marriage to Donna Hanover.

Reporting to Guider, Friedman's new role at THR is effective immediately.
