The Record Searchlight traces its roots to Redding's first newspaper, the Shasta Courier, founded in the 1850s. Its name was changed to the Redding Independent when Redding was incorporated in 1887. On Oct. 17, 1938, the Scripps Newspaper Group published the first edition of the Redding Record, which after a series of acquisitions became the Redding Record Searchlight.
