Mondo Times editors Boulder, Colorado USA | Posted at 10:37pm on Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | NBC has a new emphasis on city-specific websites, including that of KNTV TV 11 which serves San Jose and San Francisco.
The goal is to capture a bigger share of the market for local advertising on the Web, currently estimated to be worth $14 billion.
Forbes magazine reported on August 5, 2009:
"The San Francisco property's makeover represents a bold experiment in local news. Last fall, NBC launched a renovation of the Web operations at its 10 "owned-and-operated" local broadcasters aimed at fusing tiny but professional reporting staffs with timely arts and entertainment information sourced from the wisdom of the crowds.
In 10 months since its beta launch of the new format, NBC's local Web operation has grown its overall audience four-fold to 20 million unique visitors, nearly the same unique traffic volume as local juggernaut Yelp, which has been around for five years. It helps that NBC has been promoting the local sites with commercials during broadcasts of shows like The Office and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien."
