Politico reported on January 19, 2010:
"Jeffrey Birnbaum, who left his position as managing editor for digital at the Washington Times amidst the recent shake-up, has signed up as president of BGR Public Relations.
Birnbaum will run the public relations arm of the larger BGR Group, a bipartisan government relations, financial advisory and PR firm. Mississippi governor Haley Barbour and ex-White House aide Ed Rogers founded BGR in 1991.
“I’m happy to join such a well-established and well-regarded enterprise and look forward to dealing with the many new challenges that lie ahead,” Birnbaum told POLITICO in an email.
In addition to the job at BGR, Birnbaum will continue as a columnist for the Washington Times and a contributor for Fox News. He’s previously worked at several top publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Time, Fortune and the Washington Post.
Birnbaum was plucked from the Post by his former colleague John Solomon as he tried remaking the Times. However, Solomon resigned from the paper in November, and several others brought in by the now-former executive editor either left or were let go in the month that followed, as part of a large-scale layoffs and restructuring."

The Washington Post reported on January 9, 2010:
"With about 60 percent of its editorial staff gone -- not the 40 percent cut initially announced -- it would be hard to describe the revamped Times as anything other than a bare-bones publication. The metro and sports sections are gone. Much of the inside of the news section is filled with wire stories. The conservative commentary section has little staff-written material beyond the editorials. Instead, it features the thoughts of Newt Gingrich, John Bolton, Grover Norquist, Tony Blankley and other outside contributors, along with officials from such groups as the Heritage Foundation and Let Freedom Ring.
Times President Jonathan Slevin said he is not perturbed and that it will take two or three weeks "to start to hit our stride. . . . I don't feel good about the fine people who are no longer with us, but I feel very good about the strategy and the direction we're heading."
