The Steamboat Pilot & Today newspapers cover local news in the resort town of Steamboat Springs and across Routt County in northwestern Colorado. Steamboat Today is a free tabloid published six days a week and The Steamboat Pilot is published each Sunday. The newspaper offices are located at 32 10th Street in downtown Steamboat.
The newspaper was first published as the Steamboat Pilot by James Hoyle on July 31, 1885. An experienced typesetter, Hoyle moved his family to Steamboat from Boulder in the hope of finding relief from tuberculosis. He died on December 9, 1894 and is buried in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. After Hoyle's death, John Weiskopf took charge of the newspaper and was soon joined by Charles Leckenby. Members of the Leckenby family ran the paper until the late 1980s. Steamboat Today began publishing on August 21, 1989.
Today these papers are part of a newspaper group called Colorado Mountain News Media, a division of Swift Communications. In December 2021, Ogden Newspapers of West Virginia acquired the newspapers of Swift Communications and chose to keep using the Swift company name for them. The company managing the non-newspaper assets of Swift was then renamed Questor Corporation.
