Following the publication of a profoundly misogynistic attempt at a humor piece in The Mirror, the editorial staff of the newspaper finds the water temperature rising:

"Editorial: Independence at Risk
November 10, 2009
By: Editorial Board

The Mirror has always striven to provide balanced, impartial coverage as the independent student newspaper of Fairfield. Now, after four students filed harassment complaints, the entire notion of The Mirror as an independent organization is in jeopardy.

We have always thought of ourselves as an outside organization contracted by the University. We are registered with the Connecticut Secretary of State and file taxes. We take no money from student fees, unlike other student organizations. The University provides us with an office and funds in exchange for 3,000 issues a week.

If we are truly independent, as the school lists us in its handbook, we should not be held to the school’s policies. Under our funding agreement with the University, we must abide by our own Code of Ethics and Code of Procedure. There is no reason to contractually obligate us to follow our own guidelines, then try to punish us with the University’s policy."

Fairfield University Student Newspaper Faces Harassment Charges Over Column

The Connecticut Post reported on November 12, 2009:

"The controversy erupted over a satirical column in the Sept. 30 edition of The (Fairfield) Mirror that poked fun at female students who agree to one-night stands. The "He Said" column described a female's "walk of shame" leaving a male's dorm.

The lights are still on in the student newspaper's Campus Center office and bills are still being paid. Dean of Students Thomas Pellegrino insists his intention is not to take control of the paper or subject it to pre-publication censorship.

"We want a good freedom of expression policy. I can't prejudge what possible recommendations there could be," Pellegrino said."
