The Advocate began as The Intelligencer in April of 1829, but closed after a few months due to poor sales. It was reborn as The Sentinel on February 16, 1830. In May 1848, Edgar Hoyt and Andrew Smith bought the newspaper and renamed it The Stamford Advocate. On November 1, 2007, The Advocate and its sister paper, the Greenwich Time, were sold to Hearst for $62.4 million. The Advocate circulates in Stamford and the nearby southwestern Connecticut towns of Darien and New Canaan.

David McCumber is the editor of the Stamford Advocate.
In April 2009, David McCumber replaced John Breunig as the editor of The Advocate. David McCumber also became the editorial director of Hearst Corp.'s Connecticut Newspaper Group. McCumber most recently served as managing editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that folded in March 2009.
