WGCU FM 90.1 began broadcasting in 1983 as WSFP-FM. It was owned by the University of South Florida. The broadcast license was transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University in 1996, a new public university that was being built to serve the Southwest Florida region. The station's call letters were then changed to WGCU-FM. Programming consists of jazz, NPR news and talk.
