The Herald-Tribune was founded as The Sarasota Herald on October 4, 1925 by David B. Lindsay. In 1938, the Herald acquired The Sarasota Tribune, a morning paper, and became The Sarasota Herald-Tribune. On April 16, 1952, Lindsay Newspapers Inc. launched an afternoon paper, the Sarasota Journal, and moved its flagship newspaper back to morning publication. On July 8, 1982, The Sarasota Journal published its final edition. On November 30, 1982, Lindsay Newspapers sold the Herald-Tribune to The New York Times Company for a reported $86 million. On January 6, 2012, as part of a 16-newspaper deal worth $143 million, the Times Co. sold the Herald-Tribune to Halifax Media Holdings, LLC.
